This shrub has a short woody trunk with many reddish branchlets that form an open rounded habit. It has dull green flat linear leaves and the small creamy to purple flowers appear in a globular cluster amongst the foliage from autumn to winter.

Hakea pycnoneurais naturally found in south-west Western Australia from Kalbarri to the south-east near Morawa growing on the Geraldton sandplains, Avon wheat belt and is also found in the southern Esperance plains. It occurs amongst tall or medium sized trees and in heath growing in very well drained poor to moderately fertile sandy gravelly to clay soils. It prefers an open to expose sunny position and his frost and drought tolerant.

This Hakea is grown for its attractive flowers and bushy habit. It is plant in small native gardens along borders for screening or as a specimen for attracting birds. It is also planted in bushland settings and is used in drier gardens.

It is suitable for coastal and inland regions and establishes in 2-3 years and is moderately long lived. This shrub can also be grown in patio pots and planter boxes and tolerates hot humid summers but is not commonly cultivated and may be difficult to obtain requiring a specialist nursery. ID 3823
