This lignotuberous shrub has multiple stems with pale brown flaky bark and many spreading woolly branches that form a compact rounded habit. It has blue green needle-like leaves and the rusty-yellowish flower spikes appear from autumn to winter.

Banksia grossais naturally found in south-west Western Australia north of Perth between Eneabba and Regans Ford growing on the Geraldton sandplains in shrubland on the coast and inland.

It prefers an open to exposed a sunny position and grows in very well-drained poor to moderately fertile of white, grey or yellow gravelly sandy soil that is tending acidic. It is drought tolerant once established but frost tender and regenerate after fire from the lignotuber.

The Coarse Banksia is grown for its flowers and drought hardiness. It is planted in small or arid gardens as a specimen along borders to attract birds or is grown in large tubs or planter boxes. It is also used in bushland settings and suitable for coastal and inland regions establishing in 3-5 years and is long-lived. This shrub is not commonly cultivated and may be difficult to obtain requiring a specialist nursery. ID 3777
