This small shrub has many greyish fibrous stems with spreading branches that form an open rounded habit. It has dark green leaves with triangular lobes and the small golden yellow tube-shaped flowers appear in a cylindrical spike in early winter.

Banksia candolleanais naturally found in south-west Western Australia north of Perth between the Arrowsmith River and Gingin growing in low heath and tall shrubland on the coast and inland from sea level to an altitude of 290 m (951 ft). It prefers an open to expose sunny position and it grows in white, grey, yellow or brown sandy gravelly soil with a pH range from 6.0 to 8.0. It is very drought tolerant once established but frost tender.

The Propeller Banksia is grown for its spreading habit and its flowers. It is planted in small or arid gardens along the front borders or used on embankments. It is also planted in seaside gardens or a large tubs and planter boxes. It is suitable coastal and inland regions and establishes in 3-5 years and is long-lived, up to 1,000 years old.
