This coniferous tree has a tan coloured scaly straight trunk that may fork and arching branches with pendant branchlets that form a pyramidal crown. It has mid to dark green scale leaves and the male and female cones appear on different trees during spring.

Lagarostrobos frankliniiis naturally found in Australia growing in a restricted area of south-western Tasmania in cool temperate rainforest in rugged mountainous regions. It is normally found along river banks or in swampy flats and around lake shores from sea level to an attitude of 800 m (2,624 ft).
It prefers a sunny to semi-shade wind protected humid position and grows in well-drained moderately fertile organic rich moist sandy loam, amongst large boulders and with an annual rainfall of around 2,500 mm. This very slow growing tree is light frost and snow tolerant but drought tender and is killed by fire.
Huon Pine is grown for its weeping habit, attractive foliage and its prized timber. It is planted in parks and a large gardens or botanical collections as a specimen. It is also planted around large water features or in boggy locations and when young it is grown as a potted house.
It is suitable coastal and low-mountain regions and establishes in 4-7 years and is a very long-lived, reportedly up to 2, 300 years. It has been commercially harvested for its soft fragrant light timber which is light cream to yellowish with a very fine grain and closely packed growth rings and is highly resistant to rot due to its natural oil (Methyl eugano).
