This shrub to small tree has multiple greyish stems with many ascending arching branches that form a compact rounded habit. It has glossy dark green oval toothed leaves and the tiny bright yellow flowers appear in a cluster during late spring.

Azara dentatais naturally found in South America from Chile to Argentina growing in the humid moist interior valleys and on the mountains up to the timber line at an altitude of 350 m (1,148 ft).

It prefers a semi-shaded to sunny protected position and grows in well drained fertile moist sandy to light clay loam that is acidic tending neutral with a pH range from 6.0 to 7.5. It is slightly frost and drought tolerant.

The Toothed Azara is grown for its dense bushy habit and its fragrant flowers. It is planted along shaded garden borders for screening or can be trimmed to form a hedge. It can also be espalieated against a wall or used in a woodland setting tolerating low light positions. It is suitable for coastal or low-mountain regions and establishes in 3-4 years and is long lived up to 150 years.
