This rhizomatous reed-like perennial has upright culms that form a compact tufted habit. It has smooth unbranched dark gray-green culms and the shiny bronze grass-like flower heads appear above the foliage during summer.

Thamnochortus spicigerus is naturally found in South Africa growing in the south-west Cape Provenance on mountain sides in exposed positions.

It prefers a very well drained moderately fertile moist soil that is tending acidic in an open sunny position and is drought tolerant but frost tender.

This Restio is grown for its tufted habit and attractive foliage. It is planted in large rockeries all along the borders as an accent plant or used in patio pots and planter boxes. It is suitable for coastal regions and establishes in 2-3 years and is moderately long lived. It is also mass planted on embankments or use along pathways as a pedestrian barrier and is ideal around a water feature for a reed-like effect. ID 3721
