It prefers an open sunny position and grows in moderately fertile well-drained sandy stony soils that are tending acidic and is drought, salt laden wind and moderately frost tolerant.

Roof Reed is grown for its reed-like tufted habit and its brownish flower heads. It is planted in parks and gardens as a specimen along borders or is used in large rockeries. It is also used as a pedestrian barrier along pathways or is grown in tubs and planter boxes. It is suitable for coastal regions and is used around water features for foliage contrast. The foliage is commonly harvested for thatching and both male and female plants are required to produce seed. ID 3719
