This large shrub to small tree has solitary or mutable greyish trunks with horizontal flattened branches that form a conical habit. It has bright green scale-like leaves and the male and female strobili appear during spring followed by greenish cones.

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in well drained moderately fertile deep soil and is drought, frost and high temperature tolerant.
Arartree is grown for its foliage, timber, resin and growth habit. It is planted in parks and gardens as a specimen or along borders for screening. It can also be trimmed to form a hedge or used as a bonsai subject. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions and is valued for its tolerance in hot dry climates.
