This annual rhizomatous grass has upright hollow branch stems (tillers) and forms a small clump. It as mid-green flat linear leaves and the flower spikes (ear) appear above the foliage from early to mid summer followed by edible seeds.

It prefers an open sunny position, tolerating wind and grows in well-drained moderately fertile moist sandy to clay loam with a pH range of 5.0 to 8.3. It is drought, slightly salt and frost tolerant.
Barley Is grown for its edible seeds and its grass-like foliage. It is not commonly grown in domestic gardens but is cultivated commercially worldwide for several uses.
