This densely pubescent annual to biennial has slender stems and spreading foliage that forms a bushy habit. It has hairy lobed silvery-green leaves and the crimson to orange cup-shaped flowers appear singularly from summer to early autumn.

Glaucium corniculatumis naturally found from Europe to south-west Asia growing in Mediterranean woodlands or shrubland and on hillsides, extending to desert regions that are commonly saline, from sea level to an altitude of 1,600 m (5,249 ft). It has also naturalised in many other countries including North America and Australia where it is regarded as weed.

It prefers an open sunny wind protected position and grows in well-drained organic rich to poor moist to dry sandy to light clay soils and is pH adaptable.

The Bristly Horned Poppy is grown for its flowers and its drought tolerance. It is planted small cottage gardens along borders or used in arid gardens tolerating hot dry conditions. It is also grown in patio pots and planter boxes or used in roof gardens. It is suitable coastal and inland regions, establishing in one season but is short lived.
