This erect annual has slender upright weak stems that form a low bushy habit. It has mid to purplish green lance-shaped leaves and the snapdragon-like pinkish-purple bi-coloured flowers appear in a upright cluster above the foliage in summer.

It prefers and opens sunny to partly shaded wind protected position and grows in most well-drained humus rich moist soils.
The Purple Chinese House is grown for its flowers and is planted in native or woodland gardens and mass planted for bedding displays. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions establishing in one season but is short lived.
