This herbaceous perennial has a slender brownish rhizome with upright greenish stems and forms a clump. It has dark green lobed leaflets and the white cup-shaped flowers appear singularly amongst the foliage from spring to early summer.

Anemone nemorosais naturally found in Europe growing in deciduous open woodlands in valley floors and the adjoining hillsides forming a carpet effect in the understory, from sea level to an altitude of 2600 m (7,800 ft).

It prefers an open sunny to semi-shaded protected position and grows in well-drained organic rich moist soils with a pH 5.5-7.0 and is frost and drought tolerant.

The Wood Anemone is grown for its flowers and spreading habit. It is planted in small or alpine gardens as a ground cover or used in the understory in woodland settings, commonly a long watercourses or around bogs. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions establishing in one season and is moderately long-lived. This perennial is also grown in patio pots of planter boxes and several cultivars are available with varying flower colour. ID 3670
