This variable annual herb is almost stemless and branches near the base and forms an erect or spreading habit. It has grey green lance-shaped leaves and the poppy-like creamy yellow flowers appear above the foliage on a slender stem in spring.

Platystemon californicusis naturally found in western North America from Oregon to central California, Utah and Arizona growing in drier regions. It appears in chaparral or in southern oak woodlands and on desert slopes from sea level to an altitude of 1,000 m (3,000 ft).
It prefers an open sunny position and grows in most well-drained moderately fertile soils with a pH 6-8 and is light frost and drought tolerant.
Creamcups are grown for their flowers and naturalise in woodland settings or are mass planted along garden borders. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions establishing in one season and is planted in patio pots or planter boxes for spring colour. ID 3662
Note:
In its native habitat the flowers normally appear following fire but in recent times infestation of weeds has diminished its presence.
