This rhizomatous perennial has squarish tangled stems that form a bushy decumbent habit. It has mint-scented dark green oval leaves and the small purplish 2-lipped flowers, are arranged in a dense rounded cluster above the foliage in summer.

Monardella villosais naturally found in North America from California to Oregon growing in a variety of habitats that include oak woodlands, montane forests, rocky slopes and chaparral from sea-level to an altitude of 1300 m (4,000ft).
It prefers a semi-shaded to open a sunny position and grows in most well-drained moderately fertile sandy to clay soils with a pH 6-8 and is frost and drought tolerant.
