This shrub to small tree is semi evergreen with upright spreading branches that form a compact rounded crown. It has dark green felty lobed leaves and the shallow saucer-shaped yellow flowers appear singularly from late spring to early autumn.

Fremontodendron californicumis naturally found in North America from California to Arizona and Baja California growing on the coastal ranges and in the dry mountain foothills of Sierra Nevada, amongst yellow pine forests or juniper woodlands and chaparral.

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in very well-drained sandy-chalky poor soils and is very drought and marginally frost tolerant.

The California Flannelbush it is grown for its flowers and bushy habit. It is planted in small or arid gardens along borders or as a specimen and maybe espaliated against walls. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions establishing in 2-3 years and is a moderately long-lived.
