This variable perennial to sub-shrub has woody stems and is prodtrate to upright forming a rounded habit. It has leathery textured mid-green elliptical leaves and the sulphur yellow to white cup-shaped flowers appear in a dense cluster during summer.

Eriogonum umbellatumis naturally found growing widespread in North America from south-west Canada to west of the Rockies and extending to California and New Mexico. It grows in a variety of environments that include sage bush scrub, Yellow Pine forests and Red Fir forests at an elevation from 200- 3700 m (11,200ft).

It prefers an open semi-shaded to sunny position and grows in very well-drained moderately fertile sandy-stony to clay soils with a pH of 5-7 and is frost and drought tolerant.

Sulphur Flower is grown for its flowers and spreading habit. Prostrate forms are grown as a ground cover or spill-over and upright forms to use along garden borders or in rockeries. It is suitable for mountainous regions and establishes in 2-3 years and is moderately long-lived.
