This rare large shrub to small tree has multiple branched stems from the base that form a compact rounded habit. It has leathery blue green oblong leaves and the bright yellow poppy-like flowers appear amongst the foliage from spring to autumn.

Dendromecon harfordiiis naturally found in North America growing on the Santa Rose and Santa Cruz Islands and from Sonoma to Baja California in chaparral and on shrubby slopes from sea level to 600 m (2,000 ft).

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in well-drained moderately fertile sandy to clay soils with pH of 5-8 and is very drought hardy and mildly frost resistant and tolerates salt laden winds.

The Channel Islands Tree Poppy is grown for its rounded habit and bright yellow flowers. It is planted in native gardens along borders or as a specimen and used in commercial landscapes. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions establishing in 3-4 years and is long-lived. This rare shrub may be difficult to obtain requiring specialist nursery. ID 3644

Note:
This plant is very similar to Dendromecon rigidaand commonly regarded as a subspecies but is distinguished by its entire leaves and the shrub is slightly larger.
