This cormous perennial herb has basal leaves and forms a clump. It has long narrow linear mid-green leaves that commonly died back before the clusters of violent, lilac or pink funnel-shaped flowers appear in early summer.

Brodiaea californicais naturally found in North America growing on the northern coastal ranges of California in open woodlands, chaparral and grasslands at an elevation of 60-900m (180- 2700 ft).

It prefers an open sunny to partially shaded position and grows in moderately fertile gravelly clay soils or serpentine and is frost and mildly drought tolerant.

The California Brodiaea it is grown for its flowers and is mass planted in herbaceous borders or rockeries and native gardens. It is suitable for inland and low-mountain regions establishing in a1-2 years but may be short lived.
