This perennial has slender woody-based stems with upright foliage that forms a mounded habit. It has narrow lance-shaped grey green leaves in a rosette and the pale yellow saucer-shaped flowers appear in a cluster from late spring to early summer.

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in very well-drained poor to moderately fertile sandy to clay loams with a pH 5.5-7.5 and is frost and drought tolerant.
The Basket-of-gold is grown for its bright flowers, grey green flowers and spreading habit. It is planted in cottage or alpine gardens in drifts or used in rockeries as a spill-over. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions establishing in one season but may be short lived.
