This large coniferous tree has a solitary scaly greyish trunk up to 2 m (6 ft) in diameter and horizontal branching that forms a pyramidal or domed crown. It has dark green needle-like leaves and the yellowish-green female cones appear in the upper branches.

It grows in dry and moist regions on well-drained moderately fertile soils with a pH 6-7.8. It prefers an open sunny to partial shade (when young) position and is frost and slightly drought tolerant.
