This deciduous or semi evergreen shrub has upright spreading branches that form a regular open crown. It has mid-green elliptical leaves and the broad funnel-shaped red, pink to white flowers appear in a cluster above the foliage during mid-spring.

Rhododendron kaempferiis naturally found in Japan from the southern island of Kyushu to the northern island of Hokkaido and extending to Korea growing in mixed deciduous forests and shrubland from sea level to an altitude of 1200 m (4,000 ft).
It prefers an open sunny position and grows in well-drained volcanic based, organic rich moist soils that are tending acidic with a pH 4.5-6.5 and is frost, heat and mildly drought tolerant.
