This vigorous deciduous tree has a greyish trunk with spreading branches that form a rounded crown. It has dark green divided leaves with oblong leaflets and the male and female flowers appear during spring followed by winged fruit.

Pterocarya macropterais naturally found in China growing from south-east Gansu to western Hubei, Shaanxi and north-west Yunnan in forests on valley floors and along mountain streams up to an altitude of 3,500m (11,482 ft).
It prefers a open sunny position and grows in well-drained deep fertile gravelly loams that are tending acidic and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
This Wingnut is grown for its attractive foliage and spreading crown. It is planted in parks and gardens as a lawn specimen for shade or used along water courses for bank binding. It is also planted woodland settings and is suitable for inland or low-mountain regions. It establishes in 3-5 years and is moderately long lived.
