This semi evergreen perennial has weak slender pubescent stems and forms a compact rounded clump. It has hairy dark green heart-shaped leaves and the pinkish-purple trumpet-shaped flowers appear in a cluster above the foliage in summer.

Silene dioicais naturally found in Europe growing in mixed and deciduous woodlands or coniferous forests and meadows in damp places from sea level to an altitude of 1,000 m (3,280 ft).

It prefers a sunny wind protected position and grows in moist well drained rich nitrogenous soil with a pH from 6.0-7.5. It is frost and cold tolerant and can grow under hot dry conditions but is drought tender requiring reliable moisture.
