This perennial has a thick creeping scaly rhizome that forms a clumping habit. It has large deep green rounded leaves that turn deep purple during winter and the small purplish-pink funnel-shaped flowers appear in a large cluster from mid to late spring.

Bergenia purpurascensis naturally found from the eastern Himalayas to north-east India and western China growing in alpine meadows or in rock crevices and amongst scrub or along forest margins, at an altitude from 2700 m to 4800 m (1,5840 ft).
It prefers a semi-shaded to sunny position and it grows in most well-drained sandy to clay loams or rocky soils that are tending acidic with a pH 6.6-7.8 and is frost and mildly drought tolerant.
This Bergenia is grown for its foliage colour and profuse flowers. It is planted in parks and gardens along for borders or mass planted as a ground cover and can be used in rockeries. It is suitable for inland and low-mountain regions establishing in 3-4 years and is moderately long-lived.
