Zelkova carpinifolia is naturally found from south-east Europe to south-west Asia and growing in the Caucus and Alborz Mountains at an altitude up to 2000 m (6561 Ft).
It grows in deep well-drained organic rich moist soils and is ph adaptable. It prefers an open sunny position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
Caucasian Elm is grown for its spreading crown and autumn colour. It is painted in parks and large gardens as a lawn specimen for shade or used in woodland settings. It is suitable for coastal and mountainous regions and establishes in 4-6 years, and is long-lived up to 300 years. It is not suitable for suburban gardens as it is too large and the timber is not commonly used as the tree has a short trunk and slender branches. ID 3597
