This shrub has upright arching thorny brown stems that form an irregular rounded habit. It has glossy dark green spiny elliptical leaves and the small pendant yellow cup-shaped flowers appear in a cluster during late spring, followed by black fruit.

Berberis coxiiis naturally found in north-east Burma growing in woodlands in valleys and on the lower mountains. It prefers an open sunny position and grows in most well-drained fertile moist sandy clay soils with a pH 6.1-7.8 and is frost and drought tolerant.
This barberry is grown for its dainty flowers and bushy habit. It is planted in parks and gardens along borders or trimmed to form a hedge and can be grown in containers. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions establishing in 3-4 years and is moderately long-lived. It is also used in woodland settings and is an ideal haven for small birds. ID 3595
