This semi-deciduous shrub has multiple upright arching greyish spiny stems, that form a compact rounded habit. It has light green oblong leaves and the small cup-shaped yellow flowers appear in a pendant cluster from spring to early summer.

Berberis lyciumis naturally found from Kashmir to Pakistan and extending to north-western Himalayas growing on hot dry slopes or on moist valley floors at an altitude from 850 m to 2350 m (7,755 ft).

It prefers an open sunny to partially shaded position and grows in most well-drained moderately fertile soils that are tending acidic with a pH 6-7.8 and is drought and light frost tolerant.
