This vigorous large shrub to tree has a single or multiple smooth trunks up to 1.5 m (5 ft) in diameter with ascending reddish branches that form a columnar habit. It has dark green oblong toothed leaves and the small cup-shaped flowers appear in spring.

Nothofagus pumiliois naturally found from Chile to southern Argentina growing on coastal mountain regions and north along the Andes from sea level to an altitude of 2000 m (6,000 ft).

It grows in an open to exposed sunny position on level areas on north facing slopes with high humidity and almost constant rainfall. Under cultivation it grows in well-drained organic rich, moist sandy to light clay soils that are neutral tending acidic with a pH 5-7 and is frost and snow tolerant but drought tender.

Lenga Beech is grown for its attractive foliage and narrow habit. It is planted in parks and gardens along borders or as a lawn specimen and is found in botanic collections. It is suitable for coastal and mountainous regions establishing in 3-5 years and is long-lived. It is ideal for a cool moist climate tolerating snow for to eight months of the year. Note:
In the northern region it exists as a shrub above 1,000 m (3,000 ft) and in the southern regions forms dense forests and grows in well-drained volcanic ash based soils that are high in organic matter.
