This herbaceous perennial has a short thick rhizome with ascending stems and terminal leaves and forms a compact clump. The large mid-green diamond-shaped leaves are accompanied by red to purple broad funnel-shaped flowers in late spring.

Trillium erectumis naturally found in eastern North America from the USA to Canada growing in rich sheltered woodlands and along the stream banks.

It prefers a shaded to semi-shaded protected position and grows in moist fertile organic rich sandy soils with a pH of 4-7.5 and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
