This semi evergreen perennial has a short erect rhizome with upright foliage and forms a small clump. It has dark green heart-shaped leaves and of the small violet blue butterfly-like flowers appear above the foliage from spring to summer.

It prefers to open sunny to partially shaded position and grows in well-drained moderately fertile moist soil and is pH adaptable and frost tolerant but drought tender.
