This perennial has a short creeping rhizome with basal foliage that forms a small clump. It has pale green oblong crinkly textured leaves and the rose purplish trumpet-shaped flowers appear in a cluster above the foliage from late spring to summer.

It prefers a semi-shaded to dappled light wind protected position and grows in humus rich well-drained but moist soils that are tending acidic with a pH 5.6-7.5 and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

The Japanese Woodland Primula is grown for its flowers and clumping habit. It is planted along front borders in small or cottage gardens or mass planted for bedding displays. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions establishing in one season but may be short lived.
