This evergreen shrub has multiple greyish-white branched stems from the base that form a compact rounded habit. It has rounded leathery leaves and the cup-shaped yellow flowers appear in a cluster from late spring to early summer.

Rhododendron wardiiis naturally found from south-east Tibet to south-west China growing in coniferous forests, scrubland or meadows and extending into the mountain slopes at an altitude from 3,000 m to 4,600 m (13,800 ft).

It prefers a semi-shaded to sunny wind protected position and grows in organic rich moist but well-drained acidic soils with a pH 4.5-6 and is frost tolerant but drought tender preferring a cool humid environment.

It is suitable for inland and mountainous regions establishing in 3-4 years and is moderately long-lived.
