This herbaceous perennial has a slender upright branched stems and a short rhizome that forms a clump. It has divided dark green toothed leaflets and the small saucer-shaped flowers appear in a rounded cluster from late spring to early summer.

Actaea rubra is naturally found in northern North America extending to California where it grows in cool moist deciduous or coniferous forests commonly along stream banks and around swamps from sea level to sub-alpine regions at an altitude of 3630 m (11,916 ft).
It prefers a semi-shaded to shaded protected position and grows in organic rich cool moist well-drained soils that are tending acidic with a pH 5.6-7.0and is frost tolerant and drought tender.
Red Baneberry is grown for its foliage, whitish flowers and attractive red fruit. It is planted in herbaceous borders or used in the understory in woodland settings and may be grown in containers. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions establishing in 2-3 years and is moderately long-lived. It is also planted around water features and is used on shaded embankments. ID 3553
