This rhizomatous perennial has upright foliage that forms a spreading mounded habit. It has a bright green divided leaves with lance shaped leaflets and the blue, pink or white cup shaped flowers appear in a loose nodding cluster during late spring.

Polemonium caeruleum is naturally found from northern and central Europe including the UK to northern Asia growing in temperate regions in grasslands or meadows and on rocky hillsides from sea level to an altitude of 1,200 m (3,937 ft).

It prefers a open sunny to semi-shaded position and dislikes high temperatures and humidity, preferring a cool summer. It grows in most well-drained but moist moderately fertile humus rich soil with a pH range from 5.1-7.8 and is a drought tender but frost tolerant.

Jacob's Ladder is grown for its spreading habit and its flowers. It is planted in alpine or cottage gardens, along front borders or mass planted for bedding displays in parks and public places.It is suitable for inland and low-mountain regions and establishes in 2-3 years.
