This perennial-biennial herb has upright greenish stems that form a rounded tufted habit. It has pubescent grey-green oblong to linear leaves and the bright yellow wheel shaped flowers appear in a raceme from a late spring to early summer.

Fibigia clypeatais naturally found from southern Europe to south-west Asia growing on dry rocky hillsides and slopes or in rocky places from sea level to an altitude of 1,000 m (3,280 ft).

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in well-drained,, poor to moderately fertile light sandy to heavy clay soil and is pH adaptable. It is frost and drought tolerant but dislikes shaded positions.

Roman Shields is grown for its flowers and its greyish foliage. It is planted in cottage or herb gardens as a specimen or used in rockeries for colour. It is also planted in patio pots and planter boxes or used in alpine gardens.
