Stellaria holosteais naturally found from North Africa to southern Sweden in Europe and England. It has also naturalised in parts of eastern North America and grows along deciduous and mixed woodland margins or along shady roadsides from sea level to low-mountain regions.

It prefers a semi-shaded to sunny wind protected position and grows in well drained but moist moderately fertile sandy soils that are tending acidic and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

The Greater Stitchwort is grown for its flowers and tufted habit. It is planted in small or cottage gardens along front borders or used in planter boxes or tubs. It is also planted in woodland settings in drifts and is suitable for coastal and inland regions. It is wide spread in its native habitat and is easily cultivated but may become a weed under ideal conditions. ID 3530
