This vigorous rhizomatous herbaceous perennial has short upright stems and basal leaves that form a clump. It has dark green heart-shaped toothed leaves and the lilac blue spurred pansy-like flowers appear above the foliage during summer.

Viola cornutais naturally found from Spain to the Pyrenees in south-west Europe growing in mountain pastures to an altitude of 3000 m (9000 ft).
It prefers a semi-shaded to sunny protected position and grows in organic rich well-drained moist soils that are slightly dry during the dormant period with a pH 5.5-7 and protected by mulch during winter and is frost tolerant, drought tender.
The Horned Violet is grown for its spreading habit and flowers. It is planted in small or alpine gardens along front borderers or in rockeries and is mass planted for bedding displays. It is suitable for inland and low-mountain regions establishing in 1-2 years but may be short lived.
