This sub-shrub has a spreading woody branched stems that root at the nodes and form a compact prostrate clump. It has glossy dark green oblong toothed leaves and the creamy white cup-shaped flowers appear singularly from late spring to early summer.

Dryas octopetalais naturally found in the Northern Hemisphere from Great Britain to Scandinavia, Balkans, Arctic and Alaska extending to Colorado in Northern America growing in sub alpine or alpine mountainous regions commonly amongst limestone outcrops, from sea level to an altitude of 3180 m (10,433 ft).

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in dry locations on gravelly to sandy-stony calcareous soils that are moderately fertile and moist with a pH 6.1-8.5 and is frost and drought tolerant.

The Mountain Avens is grown for its spreading habit and flowers. It is planted in small alpine gardens as a ground cover or along front borders or used in rockeries. It suitable coastal and mountainous regions establishing in 2-3 years and it is moderately long lived. This sub-shrub is also grown in containers and is planted on roof gardens. ID 3512
