This deciduous tree has a dark trunk with spreading branches that form a conical habit. It has glossy mid-green ovate leaves and the tiny saucer-shaped greenish flowers are arranged in a cluster accompanied by whitish bracts, appearing during late spring.

It prefers an open sunny to partially shaded position and grows in well-drained, fertile moist soils that are tending acidic with a pH 4.0-7.0 and is a frost and marginally drought tolerant.
