This large deciduous tree has a stout trunk with large uprights spreading branches that form a compact rounded crown. It has glossy dark green oblong lobed leaves and produces slender, pendant greenish male flowers in spring followed by acorns.

Quercus petraeais naturally found in Europe from Britain to southern Norway, east to Spain and extending to Greece growing in woodlands along valleys and in the lower mountains.
It prefers an open sunny to partially shaded position and dislikes coastal exposure. It grows in most well-drained fertile moist loams to heavy clay soils that a tending acidic. It also tolerates boggy and alkaline-based soils and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
The Sessile Oak is grown for its majestic habit and foliage. It is planted in large gardens or parks as a lawn specimen or used in damp areas in woodland settings. It is suitable for inland and low-mountain regions establishing in 5-7 years and is a very long-lived. It is an important timber resource that is used in timber framing or boat construction and is commonly used to make oak barrels for wine. ID 3461

This tree is similar to Quercus robur,differing in having a longer leaf petiole and sessile acorns. It is also the national tree of Wales. (Welsh oak)
