Nothofagus obliquais naturally found in South America growing in temperate rainforest from Chile to southern Argentina on the coastal mountains where it forms forests on north facing slopes and the adjoining interior valleys. It requires high humidity and constant rain and grows at an altitude from 500 to 2000 m (6,000 ft).
It prefers a sunny to partially shaded exposed position and in its natural habitat it grows in volcanic ash-based soils but under cultivation it tolerates most well-drained organic rich moist soils with pH 5-7 and is frost hardy but drought tender.
Roble Beech is grown for its autumn colours and stately habit. It is planted in parks and large gardens as a lawn specimen and used for autumn colour contrast. It is suitable for coastal and mountainous regions establishing in 3-4 years and is long-lived. It is also planted in temperate rainforest gardens or woodland settings. Under cultivation the tree can attain a high or 1.2 m (4 ft) per year and is also harvested for its white-yellowish timber which is durable and is used in the construction industry or for manufacturing of furniture.
