This large deciduous tree has a platy grey-brown trunk to 2 m (6 ft) wide with ascending branches that form a broad conical crown. It has dark green broad lance-shaped leaves that turn orange during autumn and the small flowers appear in spring.

Nothofagus procerais naturally found in South America growing in Chile and Argentina along the coast and in valley floors and extending up to the tree line in mountainous regions to an altitude of 2000 m (6,000 ft). It appears in shallow soils on south facing slopes or in deep ravines, commonly in humid moist shaded positions with almost constant rainfall, forming thick stands.

It grows in most well-drained fertile moist soils with a pH 5-7 in a semi-shaded to full sun wind protected position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.
