This perennial has a fibrous rhizome and basal leaves that form a spreading clump. It has mid-green heart-shaped toothed leaves and the bright yellow daisy-like flowers appear singularly high above the foliage from mid-spring to early summer.

It prefers a semi-shaded to dappled light opened or protected position and grows in most well-drained organic rich moist sandy-stony to clay loams and is ph adaptable. It is frost and light drought tolerant.
The Heart-leaved Leopard's-bane is grown for its spreading habit and large flowers. It is planted in small or cottage gardens along herbaceous borders or used in shaded rockeries and naturalises in the understory of woodland settings. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions establishing in 2-3 years but may be short lived.
