This deciduous tree has a grey to pale brown scaly trunk with radiating horizontal branching that forms a pyramidal habit. It has dark green toothed heart-shaped leaves that turn yellowish during autumn and the male and female flowers appear in early spring.

Corylus colurnais naturally found from the Balkans to Turkey and extend to northern Iran growing in mountain forests and the adjoining valleys from sea level to an altitude of 1303 m (4,275 ft). It is also found growing in sheltered shady positions on the northern faces of the Himalayas at an altitude up to 3000 m (9,900 ft).
It prefers a protected semi-shaded to full sun position and grows in well-drained moderately fertile loamy soils with a pH 6-8 and is frost and moderately drought tolerant.
Turkish Hazel is grown for its compact conical habit and tolerance too hot summers and cold winters. It is plant in parks and large gardens as a lawn specimen or used in mountain woodland settings. It is suitable for coastal and mountainous regions establishing in 3-5 years and is long-lived and is suited to urban environment tolerating pollution.
