This small deciduous tree has short greyish trunk with spreading branches that form a rounded crown. It has pointed oblong mid-green toothed leaves and the small saucer-shaped greenish flowers appear in a pendant cluster during spring.

Acer carpinifoliumis naturally found in Japan growing in the valleys and ravines in the mountains of Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu and commonly associated with water courses as an understory plant.

It prefers well-drained fertile moist soils in a protected sunny to semi-shaded position and is frost tolerant but drought tender.

The Hornbeam Maple is grown for its habit and foliage. It is planted in small gardens along borders or as an understory in woodland settings. It is suitable for mountainous regions and establishes in 3-5 years and is long-lived. This attractive small tree is also grown in Japanese gardens but may be difficult to obtain requiring a specialist nursery. ID 3429
