This large coniferous tree has a trunk up to 2 m (6ft) in diameter with fissured greyish bark and upward arching spreading branches that form a conical habit. It has a dark green needle-like leaves that are whitish underneath and produces purplish-brown cones.

Picea jezoensisis naturally found in Hokkaido, Japan to northern China and extending to eastern Siberia growing in temperate rainforests, enjoying abundant moisture on the mountains and the adjoining river valleys from an altitude of 300 m to 1700 m (5,100 ft).

It prefers an open sunny position and grows in well-drained moderately fertile moist deep soils that are tending acidic with a pH 4-6. It dislikes shade, atmospheric pollution and drought or thin light soils where it only grows shallow roots but is frost and snow tolerate.
