This terrestrial fern has a short stout rhizome with ascending foliage that form a small clump. The large luxuriant deep green divided fronds are arching and the fertile fronds appear erect during summer.

Woodwardia fimbriatais naturally found in western North America from British Columbia to California and extending to Nevada and Arizona growing predominantly in redwood forests and is commonly found along water courses from sea level to an altitude of 2300 m (7,000 ft).

It prefers a semi-shaded wind protected position and grows in moist fertile well-drained soils and is drought and frost tender.

The Giant Chain Fern is grown for its larger fronds and is planted in cool moist positions around water features or in woodland settings. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions establishing in 2-3 years and is moderately long-lived.
