This rhizomatous perennial has basal and stem leaves and forms a low clumping habit. It has grey-green soft textured leaves and the bright yellow bell-shape flowers appear above the foliage in a one-sided cluster from summer to autumn.

Solidago californicais naturally found in North America growing throughout California in coastal scrub, yellow pine forests, sub alpine forests, valley grasslands and many other plant communities from sea level to an altitude of 2,700m (7500 ft).
It prefers a well drained moderately fertile soil in an open sunny to semi shaded position and is frosts and drought tolerant.
The California goldenrod is grown for its spreading habit and bright yellow flowers. It is planted in perennial gardens as a ground cover or specimen and may be used in containers. It is suitable for coastal and low-mountain regions, establishing from division in 1-2 years and is moderately long lived.
