This sub-shrub has spreading branched stems that form a dense prostrate habit. It has soft textured blue green oblong leaves and the small 2-lipped blue-violent flowers appear in a dense spike above the foliage during early summer.

Salvia sonomensisis naturally found in North America growing on the coast and inland in California in shrubland or heath (chaparral) and in oak woodlands or yellow pine forests from sea level to an altitude of 2,300m (6,500 ft).
It prefers a semi-shaded to full sun position and grows in well drained, sandy to red clay soils and is drought and frost tolerant but dislikes wet soils.
Creeping Sage is grown for its low spreading habit and blue flowers. It is planted in rockeries or above retaining walls as a spill-over and used as a ground cover under trees. It is suitable for coastal and inland regions establishing in 2-3 years and is moderately long lived. This sub shrub is also grown in patio pots and planter boxes, preferring a semi-shaded position away from the coast.
