This variable shrub to small tree has an upright smooth trunk with spreading branches that form a compact rounded habit. It has leathery dark green oblong leaves and the tiny greenish flowers appear in a cluster followed by black berry-like fruit.

Rhamnus californicais naturally found in North America from south-west Oregon along the coast and on the coastal ranges to south-western California where it grows in conifer forests, redwood forests, pine forests and coastal chaparral appearing from sea level to an altitude of 2,300m (7545 ft).
It grows in most well drained moderately fertile, sandy to clay soils in an open sunny to semi shaded, exposed or protected position and tolerates frosts, drought and salt laden winds.
Coffeeberry Is grown ornamentally for its dark green foliage, bushy habit and fruit. It is planted along garden borders for screening or is trimmed to form a hedge. It is a versatile plant that is used for erosion control on dry steep hillsides and normally under cultivation only attains a height of 2 m (6ft).

Note:
In open exposed coastal regions the shrub may attain a height and width of 1m to 2 m (6ft) but in protected canyons it can spread up to 8 m (25 ft) wide.
